About the proof-of-concept short film

Set on a single day -- November 18, 1963 -- MOB ADJACENT finds the Gentile family at crossroads when Mike Sr. turns to old friend Sam Giancana for help after his son gets arrested. The family gathers at Mike's Chicago nightclub, Orlando's Hideaway, where his wife Mary Ann worries about the mob's presence in their lives. Michael Junior thinks his father's connections are a get-out-of-jail-free card, and younger son Jeffrey can't find a way to tell his parents he's been accepted at college.

Producer, Director, and Co-Writer Gino Cafarelli

Gino Cafarelli is an accomplished actor and filmmaker, whose work spans television, film, and independent cinema. Known for his recent recurring role in the series Godfather of Harlem, Cafarelli has earned recognition for his depth, authenticity, and commanding screen presence. He appeared in Martin Scorsese's critically acclaimed The Irishman and appeared opposite Tom Hardy and Linda Cardellini in Capone.

Behind the camera, Cafarelli co-created and produced the feature film CRUISE alongside writer-director Rob Siegel—best known for The Wrestler, Pam & Tommy, and Welcome to Chippendales—showcasing his talent for developing character-driven stories rooted in realism and heart.

As a director, Cafarelli helmed Bricklayer’s Poet, which went on to win the audience award at Visionfest for its poignant storytelling and visual strength. He also lent his casting expertise to the cult horror phenomenon Terrifier, helping shape one of the genre’s most talked-about modern franchises. Most recently was casting director on the film Jersey Bred-- bringing authentic actors to this true indie film.

A Queens, NY native, Cafarelli continues to bring passion and authenticity to every project, whether acting in front of the camera or crafting stories behind it. He looks forward to bringing his creative take on the genre with the short film Mob Adjacent, based on the acclaimed memoir by brothers Jeffrey and Michael Gentile, Jr.

Building the team

A chance meeting led Gino Cafarelli to a book about two very different brothers whose idea of normal was anything but normal. He became convinced that their unprecedented first-person accounts of life at the intersection of Hoodlum and Gangster needed to be told on the screen.

Cafarelli and fellow producer Carmine Famiglietti, producer of Here After, LBS. (official Sundance Selection, Spirit Award nominee), Amexicano (official Tribeca selection), worked with the Gentile brothers to find that one moment that encapsulated their unusual upbringing among hoodlums and gangsters -- not in the mob, but near the mob -- what the brothers called "mob adjacent." Cafarelli and Famiglietti then set about recreating 1963 Chicago.
